Why is money so scary?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, especially in the lens of creative work. As creatives, we’re told and taught that money shouldn’t ever be our goal. We should bleed our art for free. While that’s a whole feeling, and one that probably deserves a series of posts, the core of it comes down to the idea that art and money are not compatible.
But why? Numbers and money and personal finance are tools. They’re resources. They set the foundation to allow you to make your art on your own terms. To live on your own terms.
It took me a long time to learn about personal finance despite having parents who had the ability to educate me about it. And while I studied finance at university, it was mostly the study of money as a commodity, something that applies to corporations and funds—not you and me.
As I’ve been considering how I can provide the most value here in this space, I’ve also been thinking about one huge, hairy question.
What scares you about personal finance?
If you feel comfortable, I’d love to know your answer. I have a few thoughts around this (and a theory) but I want to hear from you. Feel free to comment or to email me directly at authorswatiteerdhala@gmail.com. (As always, your answers are confidential and safe with me.)
